The Staten Island Farm Colony is a bunch of abandoned buildings,
tucked away in the woods behind a baseball field in S.I.
To the left is a small pic of a rough map. (you can click
on it to display a bigger one.) Its actually a
pretty cool place, but MAN is it wrecked. Every building
is falling apart. The bricks are crumbling, and even the
tile walls inside are turning to dust and crumbling away.
All the olf water pipes and electrical conduit are rusted beyond
belief. The pipes used to have some sort of insulation on
them, im assuming asbestos, cause its about 3" thick, but
its all turning (or already turned) to dust and crumbled
off. Its a good idea to bring a dust mask with you, cause
its real bad in there. We found an old, stand-up piano knocked
over and trashed in one of the buildings, but judging by its
appearance, it had laid there for a really long time
undisturbed. There were books of paperwork and some
medical files found laying about the buildings. Most of
the buildings were laid out the same, with a couple being U or L
shaped, and about 4-5 stories tall, and the rest being smaller,
rectangular buildings with only 2 or so floors. All were completely
destroyed by mother nature, with everything beginning to
crumble. There wasnt a real spooky element to it, but
then again i usually dont get the 'willies' from anything like
this anyway. Except for the barn in the back. now THAT was weird. I wonder why they sealed that one building up so much tighter than all the rest? Makes me want to go back and break in. The odd thing was, theres steps around the side that go up to the second floor (thats where the steel-blocked door is), and at the top of the steps i found a book of all the notices that were sent around to all the nurses, from 1975. Big deal, right? Not really, but who would leave it outside? (I guess someone else carried it up there and left it, but i cant figure out why theyd leave it there, of all places.) There was an old lincoln(?) rescue car mostly grown over in brush out just past the barn, but i could really identify it, cause the top half of it was missing! There was also a small garage behind the barn with an ancient bulldozer in it with a huge plow on it. This was the only area that we heard odd noises, by the way. Im assuming it was a hawk, but who knows for sure? (read the story about our adventure to the s.i. farm colony here)
This is the first house you see upon entering the woods through
the 'hole in the fence'. |
